With Scarlet and Violet having been around for almost a full year now, and its TCG catalog expanding across several regular sets, chances were that we would end up seeing a shiny set appear at one point or another. A few days ago, Pokemon revealed to us 'Shiny Treasure ex' officially, for the first time. Finally out of the state of speculation, we can observe some of the cards we've had shown to us, and start to build up the hype for this special holiday set.
Shiny Treasure ex is Scarlet and Violet Japan's first shiny card set so far, and it is set to debut on December 1st. The set contains 190 cards within it, before the inclusion of secret rares. With the inclusion of secret rares, which we know are 150 in number at minimum, this set reaches a whopping 330 cards in total. This is an overwhelmingly large set, but not necessarily unheard of. While the English variant of the last shiny set, Shining Fates, only contained 195 cards with secret rares, its Japanese counterpart Shiny Star V contained 330 cards with secret rares.
Don't let the large number scare you or lead you astray! Even though Shiny Treasure ex does contain over 300 cards, the vast majority of the cards contained within the set are reprints of cards from the previous year's sets. We can see this occurring with both VMAX Climax and Shiny Star V, the last two Japanese shiny holiday sets. Most of the shiny cards featured in these sets are variants of pre-existing cards; moreover, this can make collecting the set a little more fun. It's almost like stumbling across the same card you pulled a few months ago, and then getting excited to see it again.
Shiny Treasure ex, similar to Shiny Star V, will have its packs hold 10 cards each, instead of the typical 5 which is seen in standard Scarlet and Violet sets. 10 card packs are often the norm for Japanese holiday sets.
We can expect to see this set in English near the beginning of 2024, as our unnamed 4.5th set. We have yet to receive any news on our version of the set thus far
